William Ashcroft A Petroleum Geologists Guide to Seismic Reflection

This book is written for advanced earth science students, geologists, petroleum engineers and others who want to get quickly ‘up to speed’ on the interpretation of reflection seismic data. It is a development of material given to students on the MSc course in Petroleum Geology at Aberdeen University and takes the form of a course manual rather than a systematic textbook. It can be used as a self-contained course for individual study, or as the basis for a class programme. The book clarifies those aspects of the subject that students tend to find difficult, and provides insights through practical tutorials which aim to reinforce and deepen understanding of key topics and provide the reader with a measure of feedback on progress. Some tutorials may only involve drawing simple diagrams, but many are computer-aided (PC based) with graphics output to give insight into key steps in seismic data processing or into the seismic response of some common geological scenarios. Part I of the book covers basic ideas and it ends with two tutorials in 2-D structural interpretation. Part II concentrates on the current seismic reflection contribution to reservoir studies, based on 3-D data.

Yanghua Wang Seismic Inversion. Theory and Applications

Seismic inversion aims to reconstruct a quantitative model of the Earth subsurface, by solving an inverse problem based on seismic measurements. There are at least three fundamental issues to be solved simultaneously: non-linearity, non-uniqueness, and instability. This book covers the basic theory and techniques used in seismic inversion, corresponding to these three issues, emphasising the physical interpretation of theoretical concepts and practical solutions. This book is written for master and doctoral students who need to understand the mathematical tools and the engineering aspects of the inverse problem needed to obtain geophysically meaningful solutions. Building on the basic theory of linear inverse problems, the methodologies of seismic inversion are explained in detail, including ray-impedance inversion and waveform tomography etc. The application methodologies are categorised into convolutional and wave-equation based groups. This systematic presentation simplifies the subject and enables an in-depth understanding of seismic inversion. This book also provides a practical guide to reservoir geophysicists who are attempting quantitative reservoir characterisation based on seismic data. Philosophically, the seismic inverse problem allows for a range of possible solutions, but the techniques described herein enable geophysicists to exclude models that cannot satisfy the available data. This book summarises the author’s extensive experience in both industry and academia and includes innovative techniques not previously published.

Mohamed Rashed Seismic and GPR Imaging of Active Fault

The Uemachi fault is a 40-kilometer long reverse fault that traverses north south through the middle of the Osaka City, one of the most highly populated regions in Japan. An integrated geophysical survey, using shallow high-resolution seismic reflection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods, was carried out across the Uemachi fault system to explore the subsurface geometrical layout of the fault and to investigate the possible activity and evolution of the fault system in order to mitigate future natural hazards. Seismic survey lines that had been acquired using different acquisition parameters and instrumentation were compiled into a single 9.2-kilometer long seismic section that shows the subsurface configuration of the Uemachi fault and the Suminoe flexure. A GPR survey was conducted across the Uemachi fault to investigate the shallow part of the subsurface and to confirm the presence of the shallow faults detected by seismic survey. Integrated information from seismic sections, GPR survey and drilling data in the study area are used to construct a simple structural model, which explains the subsurface geometry, activity, and evolution of the Uemachi fault.

Philippe Gueguen Seismic Vulnerability of Structures

This book is focused on the seismic vulnerability assessment methods, applied to existing buildings, describing several behaviors and new approaches for assessment on a large scale (urban area). It is clear that the majority of urban centers are composed of old buildings, designed according to concepts and rules that are inadequate to the seismic context. How to assess the vulnerability of existing buildings is an essential step to improve the management of seismic risk and its prevention policy. After some key reminders, this book describes seismic vulnerability methods applied to a large number of structures (buildings and bridges) in moderate (France, Switzerland) and strong seismic prone regions (Italy, Greece). Contents 1. Seismic Vulnerability of Existing Buildings: Observational and Mechanical Approaches for Application in Urban Areas, Sergio Lagomarsino and Serena Cattari. 2. Mechanical Methods: Fragility Curves and Pushover Analysis, Caterina Negulescu and Pierre Gehl. 3. Seismic Vulnerability and Loss Assessment for Buildings in Greece, Andreas J. Kappos. 4. Experimental Method: Contribution of Ambient Vibration Recordings to the Vulnerability Assessment, Clotaire Michel and Philippe Guéguen. 5. Numerical Model: Simplified Strategies for Vulnerability Seismic Assessment of Existing Structures, Cédric Desprez, Panagiotis Kotronis and Stéphane Grange. 6. Raman K. Attri Seismic Instrumentation Design. Selected Research Papers on Basic Concepts

This book is a collection of three papers authored by Dr. Raman K Attri between 1999 to 2001. The book presents early-career scientific work by the author as a scientist at a research organization. The book provides a theoretical and conceptual understanding of concepts and principles for detection and measurements of the seismic signals. The earthquake phenomenon is one of the most unpredictable and often devastating natural events. Sophisticated and advanced technologies are being used for monitoring the seismic activities across the world and efforts are being put in place to develop prediction models. The theory behind the design of sensors, instrumentation and monitoring system is usually not known to electronics and software engineers upfront. The papers included in this book provide such basic guidance to electronics and software design engineers and equip them with the key computational and algorithmic principles based on the underlying theory of seismic activities. These design techniques are fundamental to designing sophisticated seismic instrumentation and earthquake monitoring systems. The first paper presents a simplified mathematical framework of the seismic events and backend computational software logic that will enable software engineers to develop a customized seismic analysis and computation software. The second paper presents a simplified description of various earthquake parameters of interest to a seismologist and how these complex parameters are compute...

Guoyu Li World Atlas of Oil and Gas Basins

Professor Li’s World Atlas of Oil and Gas Basins is a fresh and comprehensive treatise of the distribution of the world’s hydrocarbon reserves. The Atlas highlights the geographical, sedimentary and geological features of the basins, using a combination of maps and stratigraphic diagrams to depict the history, prospectivity and commercial production capacity of the reserves on a continental and country-by-country basis. The Atlas is an essential reference source for petroleum geologists and reservoir engineers working in hydrocarbon exploration and production. It is also a valuable and original teaching aid for university graduate and postgraduate courses. The Atlas provides a welcome addition to the global database of the world’s energy resources and is therefore an indispensable source of information for the formulation of future strategies to exploit oil and gas reserves. Written by one of China’s foremost petroleum geologists, the Atlas provides a rare analysis of the industry from the perspective of the country whose demand for oil and gas is set to become the largest in the next few decades. It is an important and vital scholarly work.

Victor Lyatkher M. Seismic Loads

Earthquakes are a way of life on Earth, and, whether you live in an area that is often affected by earthquakes or not, every building, every road, every bridge, and, in fact, almost everything constructed by humans in which we walk, sleep, live, sit, or visit, has to be constructed to withstand an earthquake, by following local, regional, or national codes, laws, and regulations. Further to this, the science and engineering behind these constructions go further than what is mandated by government as a part of their practice. All construction, and, in general, all life on Earth, has some risk of seismic impacts. A comprehensive description of any seismic action may be given only on a probabilistic basis and, in general, is very bulky and quite uncertain. However, for a variety of structures or systems that meet fairly simple models of behavior during earthquakes, a general description of the seismic action is not required, for prediction of the status of such facilities or systems may be sufficient to define one or more common parameters of seismic impact. Thus, it makes sense to search for optimal parameters of influence in which optimality is understood with the greatest ease with sufficient information. This book contains a description of several models of seismic effects and examples of implementation of these models at specific sites. Using this information, scientists and engineers can design structures that are stronger, safer, and longer-lasting. It is a must-have for any scientist, engineer, or student working in or researching seismic loads and constructions with a view toward withstanding seismic activity.

Yunus Mushaga Seismic Performance of Elevators in Hoist Ways

Elevators comprise components prone to earthquakes which should be protected against failures. Elevators installed in and around the Great Rift Valley are subjected to seismic effects. Dynamic Performance of elevators depends mainly on the contact between the guide rails and sliding shoes. Only few studies had been conducted to improve it. This book discusses seismic performance of elevators based on rail-slide shoe-counterweight connections. Lumped parameter dynamic and analytic models are generated for possible causes of nonlinearities; then equations of motions are formulated. To verify the analysis, a case study is conducted based on an elevator installed in Bole area that lies in zone-3 of the seismic map of Addis Ababa. The problem is analyzed with EBCS code and the PSD. It is found that EBCS code is inept to handle random vibrations like the earthquake motion and a code revision is suggested. Moreover, elevators constructed in Ethiopia found not to resist seismic motions larger than 0.1g.

Dieter Wessels Seismic Measurements Of Waves In Seams As A Geophysical Tool The Extraction Raw Materials

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 1990 in the subject Physics - Other, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Clausthal, course: Geophysik, language: English, abstract: With the increasing automation of mining, the underground mining forecourt mining is becoming increasingly important. In order to determine the tectonic content of the apron, a weather-protected measuring system was developed, which detects the position of disturbances by seismic channel waves. There are two methods for mapping: 1. The Through-Transmission Measurement provides information about a fault in the seam 2. The reflection measurement provides information about the situation. A great sense of accuracy can be achieved with combined use of both methods. The analysis of 111 measurements shows that geological conditions made the accuracy of the measurements very good, while in geologically complex structures the location of the disturbance proved to be very difficult. The loss of resolution associated with envelope formation prevents the detection of clutter. To remedy this situation, the reflected Flözwellenzug must be attributed to a needle pulse. Theoretical investigations confirm this approach. Since flute waves are subject to absorption - the higher the frequency, the stronger the absorption - and the loss of energy in reflection occurs, research in this area still needs to be done in order to use the insights gained in data processing. Remedies cause a spatial distribution of energy and thus ...

James Best L. A Field Guide to the Carboniferous Sediments of Shannon Basin, Western Ireland

The Carboniferous Shannon Basin of Western Ireland has become one of the most visited field areas in the world. It provides an ideal opportunity for examining a wide range of ancient sedimentary environments, including carbonate shelf, reefs and mud mounds, black shales and phosphates, and a spectrum of deep sea, shallow marine, fluvio-deltaic and alluvial siliciclastic sediments. The area boasts extensive outcrops and some of the most renowned sections through turbidites, large-scale soft sediment deformation features and sediments that display a response to tectonic and sea-level controls. This field guide provides the first synthesis of the principal localities in this area of Western Ireland, and presents an easily accessible handbook that will guide the reader to, and within, a wide range of sedimentary facies, allowing an understanding of the evolving nature of the fill of this Carboniferous basin and the context of its sedimentary and tectonic evolution. The guide summarizes recent and new work in the area by a range of authors and outlines issues of current debate concerning the Shannon Basin and its palaeoenvironmental interpretation. The field guide will find extensive use in teaching and research by academic researchers, professional and amateur geologists, as well as by applied geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers who use these outcrops as analogues for subsurface reservoirs in many areas of the world.
